The radical definitions and the old-style romanizations were found in THE FIVE THOUSAND DICTIONARY (Fifth Edition) by Courtenay H. Fenn, M.A., D.D.; et.al., ©1940 .

The Chinese radicals are the basic components of Chinese characters. Most of the radicals are characters themselves. The way to look up a character in a Chinese-English dictionary (or Chinese-Chinese dictionary) is to first identify the main radical. The second step is to find the desired character in the radical index. Characters are grouped (first) by the radical, and (second) by the number of (brush/pen) "strokes" required to draw the character. The radical index will provide the page number of the desired character and definition.

You may have noticed that the radicals become more complex as you progress through the list. The radicals, too, are arranged by the number of strokes. The first radical means "one" and has just one stroke. The 214th Radical means "flute" and has seventeen strokes.

ISO-10646/Unicode® basically follow the same pattern as the Chinese dictionary. So, looking up the code-point for a given Chinese character is every bit as easy as using a Chinese dictionary.
